NCHEMS Information Services provides higher education administrators, planners, and researchers with a variety of means to gain access to the wealth of national data collected about higher education. Information Services was formed by NCHEMS in 1980 to provide the ongoing expertise necessary to analyze IPEDS, HEGIS, and other data appropriately and to make these data more readily available to the higher education community.
NCHEMS Information Services maintains a complete library of the HEGIS (Higher Education General Information Survey) and its successor, IPEDS (Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System), data files dating back over 30 years. These data files are processed at NCHEMS into large databases using state-of-the-art database management systems. The Information Services staff applies the same sophisticated tools and techniques used in NCHEMS project work to the provision of information from these data.
NCHEMS has always been committed to the use of information as a means of helping to improve the management of higher education. The NCHEMS commitment to information includes the use of powerful minicomputer equipment, fourth-generation programming languages, sophisticated statistical analysis tools, and on-line inquiry and retrieval capabilities.
