| Description: |
This Taxonomy, developed by CHESS (the Consortium for Higher Education Software Services), provides a comprehensive list of over 700 different administrative activities at a typical college or university. It provides a guide for categorizing and describing the operations of colleges and universities and the administrative activities that relate to information technology support. It will be useful for establishing or improving the information architecture at an institution. It can also provide a framework for an institutional data warehouse and the supporting data element dictionary, as well as an information template for multi-campus institutions and agencies. It will be particularly valuable for categorizing data for use in benchmarking activities related to Total Quality Management (TQM) programs.
The CHESS Taxonomy is based on the NCHEMS Program Classification Structure (PCS), Second Edition and it closely follows the IPEDS (Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System) categories utilized by the U.S. Department of Education as well as by many higher education institutions and agencies. The document includes a diskette with the Taxonomy in computer-processable files that may be copied for use in establishing an institutional taxonomy. This accompanying diskette (DOS-format 3.5” DS/HD) contains the Taxonomy data in three file formats for convenient institutional use, one plain text and two different spreadsheet formats. The definitions of the original NCHEMS PCS programs and subprograms are also included on the diskette in a plain text file. |
