| Description: |
Like most Midwestern states, Indiana’s history is rooted in the pre-industrial and industrial economies
in which it competed quite well in the production, transportation, and agricultural industries. It now
stands at a crossroads, where it can embrace its past but must prepare for the challenges ahead. The
new road to success will rely largely on the creation and retention of knowledge-based jobs and the
skilled workers needed to fill them. Even within traditional industries like manufacturing and
extraction, low-skilled jobs are moving offshore or being replaced by technology, while the jobs
remaining require more education than ever before.
